In DV, stacking in two full layers is impossible. 40′ HC is most popular for e-commerce and imports from Asia (textiles, flat-pack furniture, electronics).

How many pallets go into a 40 refrigerated container? With the same stacking method, 23 Euro pallets and 20 industrial pallets come out. The 40′ Reefer HC container has a slightly higher clearance (about 2,524-2,552 mm) with the same width, resulting in an identical number of pallets per layer.

Important with the reefer container: a circulation gap of at least 12 cm must remain between the cargo and the roof of the container. The cargo vertically must not exceed the red line painted on the reefer floor, and stacking is in practice impossible due to the limited height and air circulation obligation.

The Pallet Wide (PW) container has an outer width of about 2,500 mm instead of the standard 2,438 mm – a difference of about 62 mm gives an inner width of about 2,478 mm. This allows 3 Europallets (3 × 800 mm = 2,400 mm ≤ 2,478 mm) to fit across the container instead of 2. Internal dimensions: about 13,556 × 2,478 × 2,698 mm. Cubic capacity: approx. 86 m³. Max load: approx. 27,600 kg.

How many pallets go into a 45′ Pallet Wide container? 33 Europallets (45′ HCPW) or 30 Europallets (40′ HCPW). Check with your shipper as to what length you are referring to for your specific order. Why 23, 24 or 25 Euro pallets? The math of pallet layout in a 40′ container

How many pallets go into a 40 DV container is accurately explained by math. None of the popular articles about containers show this arithmetic, and it explains the discrepancies between sources reporting 23, 24 or 25 Euro pallets.

Output: 40′ DV container, internal dimensions approx. 12,032 mm (L) × 2,350 mm (W). EPAL Europallet: 1,200 × 800 mm (±3 mm tolerance according to EPAL standard).

Standard layout (pallets lengthwise, 120 cm along the container): along the container: 12,032 ÷ 1,200 = 10.03 → 10 full rows. Across: 2,350 ÷ 800 = 2.94 → 2 pallets (2 × 800 = 1,600 mm) + 750 mm margin. Result: 10 × 2 = 20 europallets.

Mixed arrangement with rotation at the door (industry standard): 10 longitudinal rows × 2 = 20 pallets. The remaining free space at the door (750 mm margin across) allows 4-5 pallets to be added rotated by 90° (so-called “pin-wheel” layout). The result: 20 + 4 = 24 or 20 + 5 = 25 Euro pallets.

The discrepancy between 23, 24 and 25 is due to pallet dimensional tolerances (±3 mm), door clearances and loading accuracy. The number 23 appears with more conservative planning or an inferior quality container. In a reefer container (internal width of about 2,260 mm), the same rotation technique yields only 3 additional pallets instead of 4-5, hence the result of 23 rather than 24-25.

Stacking pallets in a 40′ HC container – how many pallets in two layers?

How many pallets go into a 40 HC container when stacking? This is a question that e-commerce logisticians and importers of light goods from Asia are asking. The answer depends on three conditions that must be met simultaneously.

Condition 1 – Height. EPAL eupallet (144 mm) + goods up to about 1,200 mm = about 1,344 mm × 2 layers = 2,688 mm. In 40′ HC (2,695-2,698 mm) the margin is 7-10 mm – it fits, but barely. In 40′ DV (approx. 2,390 mm) two full layers (2,688 mm) do not come in. Stacking in standard DV is possible only with very low goods below about 1,100 mm.

Condition 2 – pallet strength. The EPAL Europallet has a permissible dynamic load of 1,000 kg. If the top layer weighs more than 1,000 kg per pallet, the bottom pallet may be damaged. For heavier goods, cardboard or wooden “slip sheets” spacers are necessary.

Condition 3 – load strength. Goods on the bottom pallets must bear the pressure of the top layer. Electronics, glass and products in cartons with low compressive strength are not suitable for stacking.

Weight limit vs. volume limit – when does the scale block loading?

How many pallets go into a container of 40 is one question, but in practice it is equally important: how many tons of cargo can be loaded? With light goods, a full 23-25 pallets is not a problem. With heavy goods, the weight limit stops loading before the container is full by volume.

Weight parameters of the 40′ DV container: maximum gross weight (gross weight) according to ISO 668: about 30,480 kg. Container tare (tare weight): approx. 3,380-4,200 kg (depending on the manufacturer). Maximum net cargo: approx. 26,280-26,780 kg.

Example 1 – light goods (electronics, textiles): 200 kg goods + 25 kg pallets = 225 kg × 24 pallets = 5,400 kg total cargo. Far from the limit of 26,500 kg. Restriction: volume only. Loading of 24-25 pallets possible without problems.

Example 2 – medium goods (household appliances, ceramics): 700 kg + 25 kg = 725 kg × 24 = 17,400 kg. Safely under the limit. 24 pallets without a problem.

Example 3 – heavy goods (ceramic tiles, marble, metal components): 1,500 kg + 25 kg = 1,525 kg × 24 = 36,600 kg – exceeding the limit. Maximum: 26,500 ÷ 1,525 = 17.4 → 17 pallets. Although by volume 24 would fit, the scale blocks loading at 17.

Formula: Max pallets = MIN(max_volume, floor(max_cargo_kg ÷ weight_pallet_with_goods))

VGM (Verified Gross Mass) – a SOLAS requirement as of July 1, 2016: Verified gross mass is mandatory before a container is loaded onto a ship. Method 1: weighing the loaded container. Method 2: sum of weighed cargo + tare + packing materials. VGM is the responsibility of the shipper or exporter. Lack of VGM means prohibition of loading on the ship. VGM requirements are regulated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Fumigation of ISPM 15 pallets – an obligation for export and import by sea

When planning how many pallets go into a container of 40, it’s worth checking right away that the pallets meet phytosanitary requirements – because a lack of ISPM 15 certification could mean the entire shipment is rejected at the border.

ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is an FAO standard regulating the treatment of wooden packaging materials (pallets, crates, scantlings) in international trade. Purpose: to prevent the spread of wood pests through transport packaging.

When ISPM 15 is required: export to most countries outside the EU (USA, Canada, Australia, China, Japan, etc.) – ISPM 15-certified wooden pallets always required; import from countries outside the EU – pallets must be ISPM 15-certified. Inside the EU, the certificate is not required because the EU is treated as one phytosanitary area.

Certified treatment methods (pallet marking): HT (Heat Treatment) – heating to a minimum of 56°C for 30 minutes – standard in Poland and the EU; MB (Methyl Bromide) – methyl bromide fumigation – banned in the EU since 2010, but accepted by some importing countries (check current status for destination country); DH (Dielectric Heating) – microwaves – alternative to HT.

The weight limit of a 40′ DV container is about 26,500 kg of net cargo. With light goods like electronics or textiles (about 200 kg per pallet), 24 pallets weigh a total of about 5,400 kg – no problem. With heavy goods like ceramic tiles or metal components (about 1,500 kg per pallet), the weight limit is reached already with 17 pallets, although by volume 24 would fit. Always calculate both limits and take the lower result: how many pallets the 40 container holds by volume versus how many pallets the weight limit allows.

When exporting to countries outside the EU (USA, Canada, Australia, China, Japan and others), wooden pallets loaded into container 40 must have an ISPM 15 certificate confirming phytosanitary treatment.
